Is it healthy to drink coffee daily?
Much has been said about coffee consumption and its effects on health. Drinking coffee is for many an unavoidable morning ritual. For others it is a must in the mid-afternoon, the perfect accompaniment to a dessert and even the essential fuel on tired days. In any case, it is one of the most popular beverages in the world.
Daily coffee consumption has been discussed multiple times, questioning the effects of caffeine on health, however, it was not until 2021 that the most extensive study on the implications of regular coffee consumption was conducted.
The European Society of Cardiology, led by Dr. Judit Simon, conducted a detailed monitoring of frequent coffee consumers to clarify the risks of daily coffee consumption. The conclusion was that consuming up to three cups of coffee a day is not only safe but also reduces the risk of suffering a stroke or heart disease.
A study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology suggests that coffee consumption may be linked to longer life expectancy. This study investigated coffee consumption in various forms, including ground, instant and even decaffeinated varieties.
“In this large observational study, ground, instant and decaffeinated coffee are associated with equivalent reductions in the incidence of cardiovascular disease and death from cardiovascular disease or any cause”, said Professor Peter Kistler, a member of the Baker Institute for Cardiovascular and Diabetes Research in Melbourne, Australia.
“The results suggest that mild to moderate intake of ground, instant and decaffeinated coffee should be considered part of a healthy lifestyle”, said Kistler.
These and other findings regarding the benefits of coffee consumption have led the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to consider coffee as a health food.
Roberto Vélez Vallejo, ex-manager of Federacafé, celebrated the news, since the consumption of Colombian coffee can benefit from the recognition of the benefits of this emblematic beverage.
Una magnífica noticia para el mundo del café y para quienes disfrutamos del consumo de esta deliciosa bebida. Al parecer La Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA) está considerando reconocer oficialmente el café como un alimento “saludable”.

Coffee Consumption in Colombia
Recently, the National Federation of Coffee Growers reported that coffee consumption in Colombia increased by 5% in May of this year. This finding is supported by a study by Kantar, a leading data collection company, on coffee consumption habits in the coffee growing country.
Said study revealed that around 88% of Colombians enjoy at least one cup of the emblematic beverage per week.
The study also highlighted that, on average, Colombian households purchase approximately 3.8 kilograms of coffee per year, with Armenia and Manizales being the cities with the highest consumption of coffee in the country.
Julián Forero, the Account Manager of the Worldpanel division of Kantar Colombia, affirmed that “Coffee in Colombia goes beyond being a simple beverage. It has become an integral part of our identity and plays an essential role in the daily lives of Colombians. From early in the morning until late at night, coffee accompanies them at every moment”, affirmed Forero.
