Although just a rumor —false, by the way— the news left fans unhappy to say the least. This radical move, which was supposed to take place in August 2023, sparked a range of reactions among Disney fans and employees.

Not all reactions were negative, of course. Some fans claimed receiving the news with excitement and hope for the promising new Disney experience in Atlanta. However the concerns as to the logistical challenges involved in moving such a massive operation kept popping up. 

Speculating, fans from all sorts of places kept wondering, is Disney World moving? And well, here we are. Disney World continues to be right at the same spot.

The rumor

How would people even get to the point where they wonder, is Disney World moving out of Florida? The controversy started when an article that was supposed to be a parody was taken out of context.

Screenwriter and producer Matt R. Allen wrote a Medium piece that shocked social media on April 8, 2023. The article’s headline, which included embellished data and phony quotes, announced Disney’s transfer to Georgia. 

Despite having a “Parody” tag at the conclusion, the tale caught viral like wildfire. Social media was used by users to voice their opinions, with some ecstatic about Disney’s potential expansion into Georgia and others lamenting its departure from Florida.

Within the article you could find a quote from a Disney “spokesperson” claiming:

“We’re thrilled to be bringing the magic of Disney to Atlanta, […] We believe this move will allow us to better serve our fans in the Southeast and create a new, exciting experience for visitors from all over the world”.

Social media exploded with some users even claiming the reason behind the relocation could even be disagreements between Disney and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over COVID-19 policies. This came as a result of a highly publicized spat that is thought to be the origin of it all. 

Governor DeSantis was incensed by Disney’s COVID-19 policy, which included mandatory mask use and vaccination restrictions. The governor responded by criticizing Disney for what he saw as its policies’ hypocrisy. Although highly popular, this incident did not really have any further implications.

The truth is Disney World continues to be in Florida and there are no real indications the iconic park will be moving elsewhere. No official announcements have been made, and there will probably be none.

Reality check

At this point, asking is Disney World moving out might have an obvious answer. Although the Medium piece may have duped some readers, it’s important to stress that the entire plot is made up. 

Disney hasn’t formally stated that it intends to relocate its theme park to Georgia, and this is why.

Disney World moving to a different state would probably be anything but a good idea. The transfer would result in significant both practical and legal difficulties. Zoning regulations, building permits, and a number of other challenging legal and administrative obstacles would have to be cleared by Disney before even attempting to transfer its magical attractions.

Disney World is without a doubt an insanely massive tourist destination that brings in billions of dollars annually, so we can all agree it is quite unlikely that the business would ever consider such a move.
