Watch out, starting today there will be severe penalties if you have to renew your driver’s license and have not yet done it
Today is the last day to renew the driver’s license in the country, however many drivers have not yet done the paperwork. Thus informed the Vice Minister of Transportation Eduardo Enriquez, who also assured that, by instruction of the Constitutional Court, the deadline to renew the driver’s license will not be extended.
“It is an instruction from the Constitutional Court not to give a single day’s deadline. We have a limit date of June 20”, the vice minister told Caracol Radio. For this reason, in the last few days, the authorities have experienced heavy congestion in the process.

About 4,380,000 driver’s licenses are to be renewed, a process that was to be carried out during the first semester of 2023. However, according to Vice Minister Enriquez, about “3 million drivers will be left without renewing” the document that certifies that a person has the physical and motor skills to drive a certain type of vehicle.
On this occasion, the initiative to renew the driver’s license affects all drivers whose driver’s license expiration date is from January 1st to January 31st, 2022, or whose expiration field includes the word “indefinite”, as established by Law 2161 of 2021.
Thus, those who do not comply with the stipulated deadline to renew their driver’s license will be sanctioned with the immobilization of the vehicle and a subpoena, which entails the payment of a fine amounting to $309,336 COP, about 74 US dollars, according to the Ministry of Transportation.
Anticipating the congestion that would occur in the last few days, the authorities implemented the “pico y cedula” to make the procedure more fluid, as well as incorporated the concept of “territoriality” so that drivers could renew their driver’s license anywhere in the department, regardless of the place where they took the exams.
How to renew your driver’s license?
Please note that if your driver’s license shows any of these conditions in the expiration field, you have to renew it and the deadline is today:
- Expiration date between January 1 to January 31, 2022.
- Expiration date: “Indefinite”.
- If your document does not specify an expiration date.
In order to renew a driver’s license, drivers must carry out some steps prior to the procedure, as indicated by the Ministry of Transportation:
First, the driver must be registered in the Registro Unico Nacional de Transito (RUNT) to start the procedure at any Driver Recognition Center (CRC) and take the physical, mental, and motor coordination tests.
Secondly, the driver must be in good standing for all types of fines or, otherwise, have a payment agreement in place with the competent authority.
With these requirements fulfilled, the driver will be able to renew the driver’s license at the transit agency of the city of residence, as explained in the following tweet:

However, despite the efforts made by the national authorities, many citizens have reported delays and failures in the procedures, among which they point out the lack of availability of plastic to issue the licenses.
Other complaints are related to logistical failures in the Driver Recognition Centers (CRC), for which users request to extend the deadline.
Remember that the renewal must be performed by all drivers of private service vehicles type A1, A2, B1, B2, and B3, such as motorcycles, automobiles, motorcycles, ATVs, pickup trucks, vans and minibuses, rigid trucks, busetas and buses, articulated vehicles and tractor-trailers of private service.
