Despite the challenging international context, this progress reveals both circumstantial strengths and <strong>structural limitations<\/strong> in the country&#8217;s trade policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/mascolombia.com\/en\/xi-jinpings-speech-at-the-china-celac-2025-summit-a-call-for-a-new-era-of-china-latin-america-cooperation\/\"><strong>Xi Jinping\u2019s Speech at the China-CELAC 2025 Summit: A Call for a New Era of China-Latin America Cooperation<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Growth driven by the agricultural sector<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Cedetrabajo&#8217;s research, between January and March 2025, <strong>Colombia&#8217;s total exports<\/strong> reached <strong>USD 11,895.1 million<\/strong>, which represents an <strong>increase of 5.3%<\/strong> over the same period of the previous year. This result was <strong>led by the agricultural sector<\/strong>, which grew by <strong>36.9%<\/strong>, with <strong>USD 3,683.2 million<\/strong> exported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the outstanding products were <strong>unroasted coffee<\/strong>, which saw a <strong>103.4%<\/strong> growth, and <strong>flowers<\/strong>, which experienced an <strong>8.9% increase<\/strong>. <strong>The United States accounted for 30.7% of Colombia&#8217;s exports<\/strong> in the quarter, representing a <strong>20.8%<\/strong> increase compared to the same period in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee, flowers and <strong>tropical fruits such as lemons and avocados<\/strong> were key in boosting <strong>Colombian exports to the U.S<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/mascolombia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/informe-de-la-federacion-nacional-de-cafeteros-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"national federation of coffee growers, coffee sack, coffee beans, M\u00e1s Colombia \" class=\"wp-image-51665\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mascolombia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/informe-de-la-federacion-nacional-de-cafeteros-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mascolombia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/informe-de-la-federacion-nacional-de-cafeteros-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mascolombia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/informe-de-la-federacion-nacional-de-cafeteros-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mascolombia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/informe-de-la-federacion-nacional-de-cafeteros.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Colombian exports to the U.S.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dependence on primary products and lack of diversification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the recent dynamism, <strong>Colombia&#8217;s export basket to the U.S.<\/strong> remains highly concentrated in primary products. In 2024:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>32 %<\/strong> corresponded to <strong>crude oil<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>16%<\/strong> to <strong>agricultural<\/strong> products<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>15%<\/strong> to <strong>processed foods<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>12%<\/strong> to <strong>basic metallurgy<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>8%<\/strong> to <strong>petroleum derivatives<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These five groups accounted for 83% of Colombian exports to the U.S., showing low diversification and low value added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of a solid industrial policy and incentives for innovative sectors prevents Colombia from strengthening its export position in the long term. While between 2000 and 2012 the country maintained an <strong>average trade surplus of USD 3.7 billion per year<\/strong>, since 2013 to date it faces an <strong>average deficit of USD 1.563 billion per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This change reflects both <strong>the lack of diversification of Colombia&#8217;s exports to the U.S.<\/strong> and <strong>the weakness of its manufacturing sector<\/strong>. Colombia <strong>must diversify its exports to the United States<\/strong>, promoting knowledge and innovation intensive sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do so, it is required:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Investment in logistics infrastructure<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strengthening of technological capabilities<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Active industrial policies<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>stable and predictable<\/strong> business environment conducive to international integration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary, the recent growth in Colombia&#8217;s exports to the U.S. is good news, but it is not enough.
